In this paper, we illustrate how the use of family histories as an intervention may increase nurses aides’ understanding of problem behaviors and, in turn, their sense of mastery over these behaviors. The case study provided below shows how a seemingly irrational problem behavior may have had a rational link to painful past experiences. Furthermore, understanding this link between past experience and present problem behaviors contributed to increased feelings of mastery among nurses aides.
