This chapter provides an introduction to the topics that will be discussed throughout this book. It begins with a description of the book design and purpose, explaining the need for improved research methods for minority populations. Population characteristics and change are examined looking specifically at the following groups: Latinos, African Americans and Asian Americans. In addition, geographical diversity, economic diversity and research design are touched upon at the end of the chapter.
